The settlement agreement known as House v NCAA was set for final approval from Judge Claudia Wilken has been put on hold. Judge Wilken had stated previously her objections over roster limits going forward and now, that will need to be addressed.
Judge Wilken heard from several NCAA athletes testifying that the new roster limits that would be imposed would deny spots for athletes all ready on teams. While the settlement agreement would do away with scholarship limits, teams would see a reduction in available spots. Judge Wilken expressed she would like to see current athletes “grandfathered in” so that they would still be able to compete.
So now both sides will have to rework that language in order to receive final approval. Once approved, colleges will be able to directly pay athletes, which is sperate from the NIL deals they receive now from collectives and others.
